WebNov 26, 2008 · With the right cam these little engines would hold together at 7000+ RPM. There was considerable overlap between the rod and main journals when viewed from the end. When Chevrolet increased the stroke to 3.25 for the 327 some of the overlap was lost. Consequently t he 327 crank is not quite as strong as the 265, 283, and SJ 302 cranks. For a street machine youd be better off supercharging! Now Ill tell you what Im doing. Beyond a good stout bottom end, lightened rods, ballancing job, a little extra cam and z-28 springs, I am leaving the big RPM thing alone.

I drove a 56 Chevy pickup with a 30 over 350, M22 4 spd, and a set of 388s in a '69 12 bolt. Thats about 300 miles each weekend counting in the town driving. I would think the 302 would be capable of making a little more hp per cube as it has proportionaly larger valves per cube.
